Even a regular garage outlet keeps a commuter car like this Bolt topped up.
Level 1 Charging: The Plain Old Wall Outlet
Slow and steady, and you already own one.
TL;DR: Plug the car's portable cord into a normal 120V outlet. You'll get about 3–5 miles of range per hour, so roughly 40 miles overnight. That covers most daily driving if you plug in every night.
What it is
Level 1 means charging from a standard 120-volt household outlet (the same three-prong NEMA 5-15 outlet your toaster uses). Many EVs come with a portable "mobile connector" cord for this. Check your trunk, though, because some newer cars no longer include one.
It delivers about 1.4–1.9 kW. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates about 5 miles of range per hour, so 8 hours ≈ 40 miles for a mid-size EV.
When Level 1 is enough
-
You drive under ~40 miles a day and can plug in every night.
-
You have a plug-in hybrid with a small battery.
-
You're visiting (or renting) and just need a top-up overnight.
When it isn't
-
Long daily commutes, or starting from a nearly empty battery.
-
Cold Oregon mornings. The car spends some of that trickle keeping the battery warm, so you'll gain less.
-
When you need a lot of range fast. That's a job for DC fast charging.
Do it safely 🛡️
-
Use a dedicated outlet in good shape. If the plug or outlet feels hot, stop and call an electrician.
-
Skip extension cords. Most charger manuals say not to use them. If yours allows one, use a short, heavy 12-gauge, outdoor-rated, UL-listed cord. Never a power strip, never a 3-to-2 prong adapter, and never chain two cords together.
-
Outdoor outlets should be GFCI-protected with a weatherproof cover.
-
Buy UL- or ETL-listed charging gear only.
Handy gear
-
Duosida Level 1 + 2 Portable EV Charger (16A, 25 ft): Plugs into a regular 120V outlet today and a 240V NEMA 6-20 outlet later. J1772 plug, so Teslas use their included adapter.
-
Heavy-duty 12-gauge outdoor cord (only if your charger's manual allows one): Short, 12-gauge, outdoor-rated, UL-listed. Never a light-duty or indoor cord, never a power strip, never two cords chained together.
