Our MINI Cooper SE has a small 32 kWh battery, so a 7.4 kW Level 2 charger fills it from empty in about 4 hours.
Level 2 Charging: The Everyday Workhorse
240 volts, a full battery by morning.
TL;DR: Level 2 uses 240V (like an electric dryer). It adds about 20–40 miles of range per hour and fills most EVs overnight. It's what most owners install at home, and it's the most common public charger out there.
What it is
Level 2 runs on 240V at home (or 208V at many businesses). Chargers range from about 2.9 kW up to 19.2 kW. A typical home unit runs at 30–48 amps, about 7–11 kW. The Department of Energy ballparks it at about 25 miles of range per hour.
Your car sets the speed limit
The car's built-in ("onboard") charger caps how fast it can take Level 2 power. A bigger wall box won't help past that:
-
Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2024): Max Level 2 rate: 10.9 kW; Roughly adds: ~35 mi/hr
-
Kia EV6 (2023): Max Level 2 rate: 10.9 kW; Roughly adds: ~35 mi/hr
-
Chevy Bolt EV (2022): Max Level 2 rate: 11.5 kW; Roughly adds: ~35–40 mi/hr
-
Tesla Model 3 RWD / Long Range (2023): Max Level 2 rate: 7.6 / 11.5 kW; Roughly adds: ~30 / ~45 mi/hr
-
MINI Cooper SE (2023): Max Level 2 rate: 7.4 kW; Roughly adds: ~25 mi/hr
Miles per hour are rough estimates and vary with weather, speed and trim.
The plugs
-
J1772: the standard Level 2 plug for nearly every non-Tesla built through 2024.
-
NACS (SAE J3400): Tesla's plug, now on many 2025+ EVs too. Every Tesla comes with a J1772 adapter, so Teslas can use almost any public Level 2 station.
-
J1772 cars can use Tesla Wall Connectors and hotel "Destination" chargers with a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter, where the host allows it.
Installing one at home
-
Hire a licensed electrician and pull a permit. EV charging is a heavy, hours-long load.
-
Choose plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet, easy to take with you) or hardwired (cleaner, allows higher amps).
-
Size it right. A charger running at 30A needs a dedicated 40A circuit, and 40A needs a 50A circuit.
-
Ask your utility about EV time-of-use rates or rebates. Charging after midnight is usually cheapest.
Where to find public Level 2
-
PlugShare app: every network in one map, with recent check-ins from real drivers.
-
ChargePoint, Blink and OpConnect apps: the big Level 2 networks around Salem.
-
Google Maps / Apple Maps: search "EV charging" and filter by plug type.
-
Workplaces, hotels, grocery stores, city garages and dealerships. Salem has roughly 130 public charging locations and 200+ Level 2 ports.
Handy gear
-
Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 Charger: Tough metal-cased home charger with no app to fuss with. Plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet; adjustable 16–40A to match your circuit.
-
ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 Charger: Wi-Fi charger with a handy app for scheduling off-peak charging. Adjustable up to 50A when hardwired (lower on a plug-in outlet).
-
Duosida Level 1 + 2 Portable EV Charger (16A, 25 ft): Plugs into a regular 120V outlet today and a 240V NEMA 6-20 outlet later. J1772 plug, so Teslas use their included adapter.
-
Autel J1772 Wall Holster & Cable Hook: Keeps the plug off the garage floor and the cable coiled. Cheap insurance for a pricey cord.
-
Lectron J1772-to-Tesla Adapter (80A): Teslas come with one of these; it's the one renters and owners lose. Lets a Tesla use any J1772 Level 1/2 station. AC only, not DC fast.
-
Tesla-to-J1772 adapter (Level 2 only): Lets a J1772 car (Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, MINI...) use Tesla Wall Connectors and hotel "Destination" chargers where the host allows it. Does not work at Superchargers.
