Who it's great for
-
Salem ↔ Portland trips. About an hour each way on I-5, well within one charge for the round trip.
-
Oregon coast days. There are Tesla Superchargers in Lincoln City and Newport, so you can top up while you grab lunch.
-
First-time EV renters. Teslas are about the easiest EVs to charge on a road trip. Type your destination into the car's own map and it adds charging stops for you.
-
Trips with your dog. Pets are welcome in this car.
-
Visitors and business trips. We can meet you at the Salem airport or around town.
-
Not the best fit if you need more than 5 seats or lots of luggage space. Ask us about our Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Charging while you rent
-
Use Tesla Superchargers. Salem has two: Center St NE and Mission St SE. Pull in, plug in, and charging starts by itself.
-
Navigate to the Supercharger using the car's built-in map. The car warms up its battery on the way, so it charges faster.
-
On road trips, stop at about 80%. The last 20% is the slowest part. Unplug and go.
-
Don't worry about charging to 100%. This car's battery type (LFP) is happy being fully charged. Tesla actually recommends it.
-
Charging costs and return battery level: check your trip details in the Turo app.

First-time Tesla tips
-
The key. Your phone is the key (it works through the Tesla app). Keep Bluetooth on, walk up with your phone and pull the door handle, and the car unlocks. There's also a backup key card in the center console. To use the card, tap it on the driver's side door pillar, just below the little camera. Keep your phone charged, since the backup card stays inside the car.
-
Opening the doors. Outside, push the wide end of the door handle with your thumb. It swings out so you can pull it. Inside, press the button at the top of the door handle. The lever by the window switch is only for emergencies when the car has no power, so please don't use it.
-
Starting it. There's no start button. Sit down with your phone and press the brake. (If the car doesn't see your phone, set the key card on the console behind the cup holders, then press the brake.) Push the right-hand stalk down for Drive or up for Reverse. Press the button on the end of the stalk to Park. The car also parks itself when you unbuckle and open the door.
-
One-pedal driving. When you lift off the accelerator, the car slows down on its own and sends energy back to the battery. It feels strange for about 10 minutes, and then you'll love it. Use the brake pedal whenever you need it. The effect is weaker when the battery is full or cold.
-
Autopilot. While driving, push the right-hand stalk all the way down once for cruise control, or twice quickly to add Autosteer. Keep your hands on the wheel. Tap the brake or turn the wheel to take over at any time.
-
Sentry Mode. When it's on, the car's cameras watch over it while it's parked and locked, and they record if someone messes with it. Find it under Controls > Sentry Mode. It uses a little battery, so turn it off when the battery is low.
-
Dog Mode (Tesla now calls it Pet Mode). Pets are welcome! Dog Mode keeps the heat or A/C running while you step away, and it shows the cabin temperature on the big screen so passersby know your pet is fine. The car must be in Park. Don't use it on a low battery.
-
Returning it. Grab your things (check the frunk and door pockets!) and follow the return steps in your trip details in the Turo app.
FAQ
How far can I go on one charge?
The EPA estimate is 272 miles. At 70 mph in cold, rainy weather, plan on less. The car's map shows how much battery you'll have when you arrive, and it adds charging stops if you need them.
Do I need the Tesla app?
Yes. Your phone key works through the Tesla app. Check your trip details in the Turo app for how to set it up. A backup key card is in the center console.
Can you deliver the car?
Yes. We deliver around Salem, including the Salem airport. You'll see the delivery options on the Turo listing when you book.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, pets are welcome. Use Dog Mode to keep the cabin comfortable if you step away.
What if the battery gets low?
The car warns you early and points you to the nearest charger. If you're unsure, text us at 503-662-2772 (texts are best, since we may miss calls).
What does it cost, and are there mileage or age rules?
See the Turo listing for current pricing, mileage and trip rules.
I've never driven an electric car. Is it hard?
Not at all. It drives like a quiet automatic: there's no engine noise and no gears to shift. Read the tips above, give yourself 10 minutes in a parking lot, and you're set.
